Emergency and Disaster Preparedness Training

UCLA Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost

UCLA Academic Senate

Dear Colleagues,

The June 1st campus murder of our dear colleague, Professor William Klug, and recent incidents at Ohio State University and USC remind us that violence can occur on any campus at any time and we must be prepared both individually and as an organization to respond to these unfortunate situations. We must be prepared, as well, for other events that may have both human and economic consequence for our campus, such as fires, floods and earthquakes.

One important lesson learned from the June 1st incident is the need on our campus for more extensive emergency preparedness training, especially for faculty members. Students see faculty as the persons in charge of the classroom and they look to their instructors for direction during and after an emergency such as an “active shooter,” fire, earthquake or other emergency event. Yet, we heard from many faculty that they do not feel fully prepared to fulfill this role.

The Office of Emergency Management, in collaboration with the UCLA Police Department, has developed a course in Emergency and Disaster Preparedness to inform faculty, students and staff of current best practices and protocols in emergency preparedness and response. The course addresses preparedness for many likely hazards and includes training in basic disaster response skills, including fire safety, active shooter, earthquake, shelter in place and evacuation.

We invite you to participate in one of the training course times noted below. These courses will initially be offered to faculty members and, as space is available, to students and staff. OEM is also developing an online video training module that will be available later in the Winter quarter.

Each of us bears personal responsibility for emergency preparedness. When each member of the campus community assumes responsibility for personal safety and the safety of others, UCLA as a whole is better prepared and more resilient for whatever comes our way. We know that your time is limited; we thank you in advance for making space in your schedule for this important training.

Sincerely,
