The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) invites inquiries, nominations and applications for the position of dean of the UCLA School of Nursing.

Founded in 1949, the UCLA School of Nursing prepares nurses and scholars to lead and transform nursing care in a rapidly changing, diverse and complex health care environment through academic excellence, innovative research, superior clinical practice, strong community partnerships and global initiatives. Research and scholarship aimed at advancing nursing science through significant and methodologically rigorous research are critical components of the school’s mission. The faculty (26 full-time tenured, and 39 adjunct and lecturers) are organized in pre-licensure, advanced practice nursing and Ph.D. programs, and they are among the most highly trained in the nation; their scholarly work currently attracts $8.8 million in external funding, including $6.2 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In 2015, the school was ranked fifth in NIH research funding among nursing schools. Of the school’s 561 students, 67 percent are at the graduate level. In addition to teaching and research, the school has taken advantage of its location in the large and richly diverse city of Los Angeles to make its outreach program a model in the field. The school offers B.S., M.S.N. and Ph.D. degree programs, and it houses three centers: the Center for Vulnerable Populations Research; the Center for American Indian/Indigenous Research and Education; and the Center for the Advancement of Gerontological Nursing Science.

As the chief executive and academic officer for the school, the dean sets the standard for intellectual engagement and accomplishment, providing strategic vision for and operational leadership of the academic programs, and conceiving and managing policy and resource allocation to achieve its mission. He/she ensures that the school continues to provide academic and scholarly programs of the highest quality and effectiveness; enhancing excellence through diversity in educational programs and student and faculty recruitment; and linking the work of the school’s faculty and students to other disciplines, communities and interests within the academy and in the public sphere. He/she serves as the school’s public voice, pursuing an aggressive fund development program to build the school’s resources, and articulating its contributions in local, state, regional, national and international arenas of nursing, health care and health policy. Reporting to the executive vice chancellor/provost, he/she serves on the deans council and the council of professional school deans, and collaborates with the chancellor, executive vice chancellor/provost, vice chancellors and vice provosts, deans and department chairs at UCLA and across the University of California system. As a member of UCLA’s health sciences council, he/she collaborates with the deans of dentistry, medicine and public health and with the vice chancellor for health sciences in the creation of increased opportunities for education and research across the health professions, as well as with the dean of life sciences and representatives from affiliated institutions.

The successful candidate will be nationally recognized with strong scholarly visibility; demonstrated leadership in teaching, research and public service; experience as an innovator, ambassador and partner in collaborating with leaders from various institutional and community sectors; and the capacity to exercise policy leadership. Minimum requirements include a record of distinguished teaching, research and intellectual leadership in nursing or a related field; substantial administrative leadership, preferably in a research university; success in external and alumni relations and development; an established record of advancing diversity; and credentials that merit appointment at the rank of full professor.
