2019 Cool Campus Challenge

UCLA Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost

To: Deans, Directors, Department Chairs, and Administrative Officers

Dear Colleagues:

As part of the Carbon Neutrality Initiative, all 10 UC campuses are participating in the 2019 Cool Campus Challenge (CCC). This four-week challenge is designed to educate and motivate the University community to take simple actions to lower our carbon footprint. The CCC will run from April 1–26, 2019, with events and activities taking place on each campus.

During the CCC, students, faculty and staff earn points by taking actions that lower carbon emissions at work, school or home, and when traveling. The campus whose participants earn the most points will be named the “Coolest UC Campus.” There will also be prizes for the campus with the greatest percentage of its population participating, and for the health system that earns the most points.

The impacts of UC campus-level action cannot be overstated. UC’s first Cool Campus Challenge in 2015 attracted participation of 19,000 UC students, staff and faculty and helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

You can sign up to participate in the challenge on the Cool Campus Challenge website. Pre-registration is open now, and participants can start logging their actions when the challenge opens on April 1.

Also, please take a minute to personalize this message and forward it to your colleagues, encouraging them to participate as well. There will be prizes for top individuals and teams at UCLA. If you would like to set up a team before April 1 to compete against other UCLA divisions or departments, please contact Ryan Bell at the UC Office of the President (ryan.bell@ucop.edu or (510) 587-6242). If you or your communications staff would like marketing resources or support in drafting customized communications or have questions about UCLA’s initiatives, you can contact UCLA Sustainability at sustainability@ucla.edu.

Thank you in advance for your support and participation.

Sincerely,

Scott L. Waugh
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
